HOW TO BREW MOKA POT COFFEE

THE MATERIALS

• Fresh beans
• Fresh water
• Kettle or water boiler
• Moka pot
• Coffee grinder

THE MEASUREMENTS

We recommend 2 TBSP of coffee for every 1 cup of water. For hoity-toity types, that’s a coffee-to-water ratio of 50 grams (1.8 oz) of ground coffee per 1 litre (34 fl oz) of water.

For the bold folks out there, use more. And for the, um, less bold… you get it.

THE METHOD

Step 1

BREAK IT DOWN.

Unscrew and take the Moka Pot apart. Water will go in the base / bottom. Coffee goes in the filter.

When screwed together and heated, the water rises through the grounds, and out the pipe into the pot.

Step 2

BOIL WATER.

That’s right. Boil the water, before adding to the Moka Pot.

Step 3

GRIND FRESH BEANS.

Grind’em fine, but not too fine. Think fine sand or table-salt size, not dust or powder.

Step 4

ADD BOILED WATER TO THE BASE.

Pour enough hot water in the base to fill just below the release valve. (The little knobby thing on the side. You’ll see it.) Don’t over fill!

Step 5

ADD DEM FINE GROUNDS TO THE FILTER.

Fill it right up & level it off. Just don’t tamp or pack them down.

Step 6

SCREW IT.

Gently drop the coffee holder into the base. Make sure there’s no grounds on the seals or ridges.

Then screw the top & bottom of the Moka Pot together. (Use a towel on the base, to avoid burnt hands.)

Step 7

HEAT IT UP.

Put the pot onto a medium-low heat source and leave the top lid open. Keep the handle off the heat source. Don’t want to hold a hot handle!

Step 8

WHOA, BUSTER!

Hold yer horses. Take a little moment to check those eyelids for holes. Or stretch yo'self out, you stiff little number. This step could take 5-10 minutes. Relax! A watched pot never boils.

Step 9

THE MAGIC.

Now, take a look in that pot. Coffee will start to gently flow up and out from the pipe. Reduce the heat without interrupting the flow. Watch the rich-dark coloured stream get lighter and lighter and listen for a puffing sound. That means it’s done.

Remove from heat and close the lid.

Step 10

SHUT IT DOWN.

Wrap a cold towel around the base of the Moka Pot or run it under cold water to stop the brewing process and prevent a bitter taste from developing.

Step 11

SERVE. SIP. SAVOUR.

Pour the coffee as soon as it stops bubbling out.

Step 12

REPEAT. SHARE. WAKE UP & KICK ASS.
